Umdloti Local
Umdloti from the air: the village, the beach road and surf breaking along the shore

eMdloti, KwaZulu-Natal

Umdloti

A beach village of about 3,000 people, 14 minutes from King Shaka airport. Whales from July, a tidal pool for the kids, and a thousand hectares of new town going up next door.

Next door

About 1,000 hectares of former sugarcane sit on Umdloti's southern boundary, master planned in seven nodes with 350 hectares of protected forest and 6 km of coastline.

Devmco Group was confirmed master developer on 6 November 2024. This site keeps one page for each of the 17 named developments, with the date every row was last checked.

Chapter two

The water

The beach is shark netted, with nets about 400 m offshore, and the tidal pool next to it has its own lifeguard tower.

Whales pass between July and November. June is rated the most consistent month for surf.

Chapter three

The year

Umdloti is not the same place in June as it is in December. The ring shows the four windows that change what the water is for, with the month you are reading this in lit up.

JFMAMJJASOND September now
Windows are seasonal patterns, not guarantees. Check the day before you go.
  • Whales July to November

Southern right and humpback whales pass on their KwaZulu-Natal migration. No boat needed.

  • Sardine run May to July, peaking in June

Umdloti sits on the run’s northward path. It brings dolphins, sharks, gannets and gamefish with it.

  • Kitesurf September to April

Steady NNE to south-westerly wind averaging 10 to 25 knots, with flat water in the lagoon.

  • Holiday peak December and January, plus Easter

The village runs up to ten times its usual size. Easter moves year to year, so it is not drawn on the ring.

  • Best surf June

About 44% clean conditions against 37% blown out, on reliable offshore westerlies.

One more thing

Stay in the village

Most doors in Umdloti are a short walk from the sand, which is the whole reason people keep coming back to it.

Chapter five

Where things are

Umdloti is small enough to walk and close enough to the airport that people fly in and swim the same morning. Six points, each one a page.
